Is it Mother’s Day new?

We would not be able to assert that Mother’s Day is a new thing from modern era, because from as long as Paleolithic era (30,000 BCE) we have indications that humans recognized the importance of Mother and Motherhood when carving in rock the Venus figurines, some of which date as far back as 25,000 years ago.

Relevant references to values are made in our modern world, referring to Woman and Motherhood:  such as Mother Earth, Motherland, Justice allude or characterizes of women and her importance in our society.

Nonetheless, it seems that we still need a remainder.  Although more than just commercially, our society is still in need to uphold gender equality as such a needed value pending to be achieved.

What is Mother’s Day and why do we celebrate it this weekend?

Most of the Countries celebrate Mother’s Day the Second Sunday of May each year, among them the vast majority of Latin American countries, with few exceptions such as Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador who celebrate it on May the 10th, or Paraguay who does it on May 15th. and Bolivia who does on May 27th. Also, República Dominicana and Haiti who celebrate Mother’s Day last Sunday of May and Nicaragua who does May 30th, finally Argentina which celebrates Mother’s Day the Third Sunday of October and Costa Rica who does it on August 15th.

On Spain and Portugal, 2 other countries with strong ties to Latin America, Mother’s Day celebrations take place on First Sunday of each May.

Nonetheless, it seems that we still need a remainder, although more than just commercially, of our society is still in need to uphold gender equality as such a needed value pending to be achieved.

Although it was not planned as what we now have, initially Mother’s Day was a commemoration planned by a daughter to her mother back in 1908. The peculiarity that is most appealing for us is that such Mother, Mrs. Ann Reeves Jarvis, was a peace activist during the American Civil War. She was a woman who confronted lost and pain. Nevertheless, those experiences forge a strong character that lead her to care for soldiers on both sides who were fighting within her community boundaries. She dressed, feed and care for sick sons and husbands, victims of the Civil War in a State divided by it: Virginia.

Those values embodied as a woman, are what we are celebrating today.

Those women that we call Mom, Daughter, Sister, GranMa, are the wonderfull people that have provided us their time and tears to help us reach our dreams and become adults.
